Starting your college career is an exciting time, but it is also stressful and scary. Most students adjust to classes and parties, but their living arrangements in the dorm may be the last thing they get used to. If they are used to a big family, it might be tough sleeping in a small room with just one other person. While it will take some time to settle in no matter what you are used to, there are items you can give a new college student that will help make their dorm room a more comfortable space. If the room they return home to at the end of the day is comfortable and feels a little like home, it will make it easier to get used to college. One of the things dorm rooms are often lacking is storage space. Students who bring small shelves with them will be able to organize their belongings and keep their study supplies and text books in order. They can also display photographs and trinkets on the shelves and make their room look homey and comfortable. Shelving comes in all shapes and sizes, so it is best to get the dimensions of the room before making a purchase. Students may have a chance to look around at a campus visit before they officially move in. Instead of buying new shelving, considering visiting yard sales and thrift stores for sturdy pieces that can be refinished to suit the student’s personal style.
